Hello, I am a Registered Physiotherapist treating dedicated to the highest quality of care possible for my patients. The 'V' stands for a Variety of areas I treat in including Vestibular, Vertigo, Visceral, Vertebral, Vagus Nerve and Visual Disturbances.
The Vestibular Rehabilitation area of Physiotherapy is used in the treatment of Vertigo, dizziness, balance problems, concussion and headache, etc. After extensive training and experience in this area since 2006, I received my Certification in Vestibular Rehabilitation : A Competency-Based Course from Emory University in Atlanta. Continually expanding expertise allows me to provide excellence in patient-centred assessment and treatment. The most recent example relates to my courses in Manual Therapy for the Cranium (doreenkillens.education), CranioSacral Therapy (upledger.com) and Visceral Manipulation (barralinstitute.com) which have allowed me to much better help those patients with complex symptomatology.
These therapies consist of freeing up fascial adhesions around the head, spinal column and abdominal organs to allow them to move and function better. By doing this, we can desensitize the nervous system which includes cranial nerves, in particular, the Vagus nerve. Reducing Vagal tone with this approach (along with exercises and perhaps dietary changes) helps to reduce dizziness, nausea, headaches and sensitivities. Several Concussion Rehab courses (concussionrehabworks.com) have also increased my ability to treat those with post-concussion symptoms and to help prevent symptom recurrence.
Back to the beginning of my education: I obtained Bachelors and Masters degrees in Kinesiology and Sports Medicine from Laurentian and Lakehead Universities, and then completed my Physiotherapy degree at McMaster University. After years of subsequent competency-based training, I received my Diploma of Advanced Manual & Manipulative Therapy, and thus am a Fellow with the Canadian Academy of Manipulative Physiotherapy (FCAMPT), and am able to treat a multitude of Vertebral and peripheral dysfunctions including with manipulations, mobilizations and massage.
My other physiotherapy areas of expertise include orthopaedic and sports injuries. Specifically, my training in Running Injury Prevention and Treatment (therunningclinic.com) has simplified the return-to-run process. As well, I am certified in Trigger Point Dry Needling (evidenceinmotion.com) thus allowing me to access and reset trigger points deep in muscle, these points often being a source of pain, restriction and even dizziness.
Since joining in 2006, I love being part of the health care teams at Killens Reid Physiotherapy and PhysioSport Chelsea (see contact page). Formerly a Canadian Cross-Country Ski Team member, I still keep in shape with my family by skiing, cycling, running, swimming, singing ... and paddling - often in the current looking for the 'V'!
